Join the Jefferson County Parks & Recreation Advisory Board (JCPRAB)
Are you passionate about local parks and recreation? There are currently open JCPRAB positions for District 1 (Port Townsend), and District 2 (Port Hadlock Area). In addition, we also have District 2 and District 3 members whose terms are expiring but are interested in continuing serving. There is an opportunity to run against them for membership on the board.
Members work on policies and initiatives the support wonderful parks like HJ Carroll Park, Gibbs Lake, Indian Island, Quilcene Park, Lake Leland, Oak Bay and East Beach for example. The board also advises the development and implementation of our county wide community recreation program which operates a large number of youth and adult sports leagues, the Port Townsend Rec Center, and summer camps among other things.
Meeting Schedule & Commitment
The board meets every other month starting in February on the first Thursday of the month from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Remaining meetings in 2026 are June 4, August 6, October 1, and December 3.
Member Responsibilities
Meetings usually feature guest speakers and focus on community input, problem-solving, and various policies regarding park and trail use, improvement projects, or strategic plans. The core work of the board is:
- Support our dedicated volunteers, and promote volunteerism
- Participate in our annual parks tour and report the state of the parks to the Board of County Commissioners
- Create the Jefferson County Parks, Rec, Open Space, & Trails Comprehensive Plan
There are also optional opportunities to choose from such as:
- Represent Parks and Recreation at community events or meetings
- Volunteer directly in a park or with a recreation program
- Serve on a committee working on trail planning efforts
